Ad Dakhiliyah lies inland of the Hajar mountains, where date oases and falaj irrigation gather around mud-brick towns. Nizwa, with its fort and souq, is the historic center. Bahla is known for Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Al Hamra for the mountain villages at the foot of Jebel Shams.

Al Jabal Al Akhdhar is its own wilayat on the plateau, not a neighborhood of Nizwa. Adam stands at the southern edge of the interior toward the desert. Samail and Bidbid sit on the historic route between the coast and Nizwa.

The published wilayats are Wilayat Adam, Wilayat Al Hamra, Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Province, Wilayat Bahla, Wilayat Bidbid, Wilayat Izki, Wilayat Manah, Wilayat Nizwa and Wilayat Samail.
